The ten marks
Six planets and the four elements, one to each spell. Every mark is assigned for a
reason the drink itself gives, and each volume opens on the table that teaches them.
Volume the First, Signature
The Witches Bloom
Mercury
Lavender is Mercury’s herb in the traditional correspondences, and Mercury governs the volatile and the aromatic. The house latte is lavender and vanilla, so the strongest real claim available is also the right one.
Rose Garden Ritual
Venus
The least arguable pairing in the set. Venus rules the rose and copper and every garden. If one mark has to be obvious, it should be this one.
Faerie Fog
Air
A fog is air holding water, and this is the only drink on the menu named after weather. The element does the work a planet would only approximate.
Ash & Honey
Sol
The Sun owns gold and honey, and bees are the Sun’s creatures. In alchemy the same circle means both the Sun and gold, and the drink pours gold.
Fireside Ritual
Fire
Named after a hearth, served hot, and the only cup on the menu that wants a flame under it. Mars would be a claim about spice; fire is a statement about the drink.
Volume the Second, Seasonal
Midsummer Muse
Jupiter
Jupiter rules abundance and expansion, and this is the most lavish build on the menu at five ingredients. Midsummer belongs to the Sun by rights, but the Sun is honey’s, so the Muse takes the planet of plenty instead. That tension is worth knowing about.
The Veil
Saturn
Saturn keeps boundaries, thresholds and endings. A veil is a boundary you can see through, which is Saturn’s exact business and not a metaphor stretched to fit.
Shadow & Velvet
Earth
Earth is weight, dark and substance. Brown sugar over cold brew is the heaviest and darkest cup here, and the name already says shadow. Saturn would have suited it, but the Veil has the better title to Saturn.
Blueberry Bog Brew
Water
A bog is standing water. The drink is named after wetland, in a city built on it, so the element is doing the naming for us.
The Little Witch
Luna
The Moon owns milk and silver and all things pale. This is a milk drink with no coffee and no tea in it, the smallest cup on the menu, and a first spell. Luna is the most universal correspondence in the set.
