Caelus is the Roman sky honored as a god: the vault of heaven itself, named in the genealogies as father of Saturn and grandfather of Jupiter, so that the ruling line of heaven descends from the sky in person. He appears at the top of the emperor Augustus's Prima Porta breastplate, spreading the canopy of heaven over the scene below. The seventh planet bears the Greek sky's name, Uranus; Caelus is Rome's own word for the same expanse.
