Mars is among the greatest gods of Roman religion, father of Romulus in the founding legend and namesake of the month of March, when the Salii, his leaping priests, danced through the city bearing the sacred ancilia shields. His festivals open and close the season of campaigning and of farming alike, and Cato the Elder preserves an old prayer to Mars for the protection of farm and field. The Campus Martius, the field of Mars, was the mustering ground of the city.
