Nirriti is the Vedic goddess of decay, misfortune, and dissolution, dwelling apart in the realm of what has come undone. The hymns most often ask that she stay at a distance, and her acknowledgment in rite is an honest reckoning with loss. In the mansion she keeps, undoing is bound to the search for the root of things.

Usually invoked apotropaically in the Vedic corpus, that is, asked to keep her distance rather than to draw near.
