The thousand-eyed keeper of the deep, from whom nothing done in secret is hidden.

Varuna is among the most exalted deities of the early Vedic hymns, guardian of rita, the cosmic order, who sees all that is done and binds the untrue with his snares. In later tradition he is lord of the ocean and the waters. He carries the qualities of depth, moral gravity, and hidden healing, fitting the mansion called the hundred physicians.
