Venus in Roman religion is the goddess of love, beauty, and persuasive charm, with old associations with gardens and growing things. Her observances included the Veneralia on the first of April and a share in the wine festival of the Vinalia, and temples rose to her under many titles, among them Venus Erycina on the Capitol and Venus Genetrix in the forum of Julius Caesar, who honored her as ancestress of his line. Through her son Aeneas she was counted a mother of the Roman people.
