Danu is the mother the Tuatha De Danann carry in their name: the tribe of the goddess Danu. Almost no story about her survives directly, and that absence is itself the shape of her: she is before the tales, the ground they stand on. In Kerry two hills are still called the Paps of Anu for the mother goddess often identified with her, and scholars have long heard her name in the great rivers of Europe, though that reading is argued.
