The First House

The House of the Helm

The self steps over the horizon and takes the tiller of its own life.

The first house is the Ascendant itself, the Horoskopos or Hour-Marker, the sign rising in the east at birth. Tradition reads it as the body, the temperament, the appearance, and the whole bearing of the native, the vessel through which every other house is lived. Paulus of Alexandria also called it the Helm, the steering-oar of the chart.

Called Horoskopos in Greek. The Helm (oiax) rendering is attested in Paulus Alexandrinus. Mercury has its joy here, the neutral planet placed where day and night converge.

A house is personal. It exists only in a birth chart, cast from your own horizon at your own hour; the sky holds no first house until someone is born under it. The kinship with Aries is an analogy of order, not an identity.
