The Eighth House
The House of Death and Legacies
The still place where what is not ours passes into our keeping.
The eighth house the Greeks called the Idle place, for it neither beholds the Ascendant nor drives the chart's action. Tradition assigns it death and the affairs that follow death, wills, legacies, and the goods of others, including the dowry of the partner. It is a quiet house, and the astrologers read it soberly rather than fearfully.
Jupiter here is said to bring gain through legacies and the goods of others.
Saturn here keeps the house's stillness, settling estates slowly.
The Moon here draws the native into the affairs of the departed.
Argos in Greek, the idle or inactive place. Some later framings call it a gate of death by extension from its topics; the older and more standard name is simply Idle. Aversion to the Ascendant, not malice, is the root of its character.
A house is personal. It exists only in a birth chart, cast from your own horizon at your own hour; the sky holds no eighth house until someone is born under it. The kinship with Scorpio is an analogy of order, not an identity.
