From al-adhara, of the virgins. It stands at about 26° Cancer (tropical).

The last bright light of the Dog's tail, kin in name to the virgins.

Aludra sits at the tail of the Great Dog and shares its root with Adhara, both drawn from the Arabic al-adhara, the virgins, the small group of stars in the Dog's hindquarter. It is a blue supergiant of great true luminosity, dimmed by its distance to modest apparent brightness. Little planetary lore beyond the name is handed down.
