From the Arabic al-sa'id, the shin, or the upper part of the foreleg. It stands at about 29° Pisces (tropical).

Scheat is Beta Pegasi, marking the upper corner of the Great Square and standing for the shin or upper foreleg of the winged horse. It is a red giant, cool and variable, one of the brighter stars of the figure. Robson gives it the nature of Mars and Mercury and attaches to it a caution against danger by water, drowning, and shipwreck, together with extreme misfortune when ill-placed. It is a named star of long standing but carries no place among the Behenian stars.

Robson's delineation carries a distinct warning of danger by water. Not a Behenian star.
