The Fixed Stars

Furud

Zeta Canis Majoris

The solitary ones, the bright single stars. It stands at about 12° Cancer (tropical).

A lone light low at the Dog's hind foot.

Furud comes from the Arabic al-furud, the solitary or single ones, a name once given to scattered stars standing apart in this part of the southern sky, and later fixed to this blue-white star at the Dog's hind foot. It shines with modest brightness. No planetary nature is attested for it in the tradition.

A named star of slight lore, remembered mainly for the meaning of its name.
