The Fixed Stars

Saiph

Kappa Orionis

The sword of the giant, from the Arabic saif al-jabbar, though the name settled on the knee. It stands at about 27° Gemini (tropical).

The hunter's southern knee, wearing a sword's name it never asked for.

Saiph squares off the great quadrilateral of Orion at the southeastern corner, opposite Rigel. Its name means the sword of the giant, but in the drift of transmission the word left the sword hanging at the Belt and landed on the hunter's knee, where it stayed. The star has no delineation in Robson, and little traditional astrological lore attaches to it.

Little traditional lore attaches to this star; the misplaced name is its one good story.
