Tau Scorpii

Paikauhale

Unnamed in the old Western books; Paikauhale is a modern adoption from Hawaiian, a wanderer with no fixed house. It stands at about 12° Sagittarius (tropical).

The heart's near attendant, keeping pace a step behind Antares.

Tau follows just below Antares, and the traditions that honored the Scorpion's heart counted its flanking stars with it, the Arabic mansion Al Qalb names Sigma and Tau at the heart's sides, and the classical reckoning of Jyeshtha took the same trio. Its modern name, adopted from Hawaiian star knowledge, means a vagabond going house to house. The star has no individual delineation in the Western handbooks, and little traditional lore attaches to it on its own.

★︎ Nakshatra. Counted among the stars of Jyeshtha, the eldest, the seniormost.

Included under Jyeshtha by the traditional three-star reckoning of that asterism; the nakshatra's chief star is Antares. Little individual lore attaches.
