Unurgunite carries a name from the Boorong people of the Wergaia in western Victoria, recorded in the nineteenth century. In their sky this star is an ancestral figure flanked by two stars taken as his wives, and the Moon, Mityan, is said to have tried to lure one of them away and been driven off. It is a red supergiant of modest apparent brightness. This is an Aboriginal star-name rather than a figure of the Mediterranean tradition, and no Western planetary lore is attached to it.

The name is from Boorong sky-knowledge; no classical fixed-star lore attaches to it.
